Montgomery city leaders considering a curfew to combat crime

The recent increase in crime in Montgomery now has city officials considering a curfew.

The Montgomery City Council’s Public Safety Standing Committee met this afternoon with interim Police Chief James Graboys. They discussed a possible curfew and an ordinance establishing parental responsibility of minors.

In the end, city council members and police couldn’t come to an agreement. Councilman Glenn Pruitt says the curfew could do more harm than good.

“There was some positive feedback about the parental ordinance because all this is doing is holding parents accountable for their children’s actions, and I think that’s pretty fair. The penalties on the parental ordinance are left up to the municipal judge. It would be $100, possibly 10 days in jail, but it shall be required that they attend parenting classes and they must complete them, so I think that the parental ordinance holding the parents accountable has more bang for your buck then a curfew,” Pruitt told Action 8 News.

The next meeting is scheduled on Thursday, August 1.
