Students at MPS schools head back to class
It was back to the books today for students in Montgomery Public Schools as the new school year starts.
The start of school is an exciting time for students and teachers.
“We’re excited to have our kids come back for the start of the school year with so many things happening,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Melvin Brown. “Like the merge of our Lanier students coming over to Carver, opening of our 9th grade Academy, so that starts today. We have a new electronic bus system that’s going in place.”
As Dr. Brown mentioned, this year is especially noteworthy for administrators because of a big change.
With the closing of Sidney Lanier High School in May, all students from there will now attend Carver High School.
These one-time rival schools now come together under one roof.
“As I told my teachers yesterday, my novice teachers and my veteran teachers, whatever they do this day, the first day moving forward, it sets the pace and the standard from day one,” said Carver High School Principal Gary Hall.
Students who may already be looking forward to a day off will get it on Labor Day, September 2nd.
Looking further ahead, the last day of the school year is on May 22nd.
