A renovation project underway at Memorial Stadium in Selma — could provide a new stream of revenue for the city — once completed.

Waka Track0221 Pkg1The project is a major step in the process of turning the facility into a venue capable of hosting high school and collegiate track and field events.

“They’re resurfacing our whole track. And it’s going to Alabama high school ready and NCAA ready,” said Gerald Barron.

Crews have already removed the old track surface — and stripped the track down to its foundation.
And now they’ve started the resurfacing phase of the project.

The project is totally funded by a $750,000 grant — secured by State Senator Robert Stewart and State Representative Prince Chestnut.

“So, if you want to have a track meet as a high school or as a college, you can come here and have the track,” said Barron.

“I’m really excited about this,” said Mayor James Perkins, Jr.

“We’re looking forward to sharing this with our high school, middle school, with our community at large. We now have good surfaces on our track and field facilities to be able to train and to compete.”

City officials say the project should be complete by the end of the month.
