ACTION 8 UPDATE: More details have been released about an assault on a Montgomery police officer during a traffic stop.
At about 7PM last night, Saturday, February 22, special agents assigned to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) Major Crimes Unit, responded to an incident regarding the assault of an officer with the Montgomery Police Department, according to Lt. Jeremy Burkett with ALEA.
Burkett said the officer was working with the Metro Area Crime Suppression (MACS) Unit. As officers tried to conduct a traffic stop near the 1000 block of Eastern Boulevard near Monticello Drive, a person inside the vehicle got out and tried to run away. He said the suspect, 31-year-old Edward Burnes of Montgomery, was arrested and charged with second-degree assault.
Burkett said Burnes is also being held in the Montgomery County Jail with no bond.
The officer was taken to Jackson Hospital for treatment of injuries. Lt. David Wise of the Montgomery Police Department told Action 8 News the officer’s injuries were minor.
Details of the nature of the injuries haven’t been released. The officer’s name also hasn’t been released.
