ONLY ON ACTION 8: One-on-one interview with U.S. Sen. Katie Britt
ONLY ON ACTION 8: U.S. Sen. Katie Britt is sitting down to talk about the first several weeks of the Trump administration and her goals for the people of Alabama.
Britt, a Republican who lives in Montgomery, has served in the U.S. Senate since 2023. Even as a freshman senator, she has quickly gained the national spotlight, giving the Republican response to then-President Biden’s State of the Union Address last year, then joining President Trump in attending this year’s Super Bowl.
Britt told Action 8’s Estee Morrison that her focus remains on the people of Alabama.
“Unfortunately, Alabama has one of the highest maternal mortality rates, Estee, in the nation. We jockeyed at the top, and it disproportionately affects Black women. And in my thought, in 2025, that should not be the case,” Britt said.
“I want to make sure that we change the trajectory of that child care is another thing that I’m really interested in tackling this Congress.”
Britt’s experience as a mother raising two teenagers inspired a piece of legislation she is co-sponsoring with two Democrats and one Republican, called the Kids Off Social Media Act.
“Between 2011 and 2019 depression rates amongst our children more than doubled. That perfectly coincides with the rise in social media and the social media usage. Kids Off Social Media Act doesn’t allow kids to be on social media until they’re 13.
“Then it allows, it says you can’t use algorithms against our children under the age of 17. And we find that algorithms are what drive kids kind of into a hole. The longer you stay on a post, the more money they make, and the more depressing the content, the longer you stay. And so knowing those things and saying, ‘Hey, like, let these kids explore without driving them into that hole.’ We think it’s important.”
Britt is joining other members of Alabama’s Congressional delegation to push for Space Command and its 1,600 jobs to be moved from Colorado to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville.
