Police Chase Ends in Crash, Injuring Two in Montgomery County

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ala. (WAKA) – A police chase that began in Prattville ended in a two-vehicle crash in Montgomery County on Wednesday, leaving two people injured.

According to Prattville Police Chief Mark Thompson, the incident started around 4 p.m. when officers attempted to stop a Toyota Camry involved in a hit-and-run on MLK Drive in Prattville. The driver refused to stop, leading officers on a pursuit onto Interstate 65 and into Montgomery County.

The chase continued through multiple busy streets in Montgomery before the Camry collided with an 18-wheeler on U.S. 231, about half a mile past Sweet Creek Farm Market. The driver of the Camry was injured and transported to Baptist Medical Center South, while the passenger was flown by helicopter to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital for treatment. Their identities have not been released.

The crash temporarily shut down all four lanes of U.S. 231, causing major traffic delays.

A witness who was driving on Interstate 65 during the pursuit described the scene as “terrifying,” saying he saw headlights coming toward him in his lane while traveling at 70 mph.

Multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in the pursuit and crash response, including troopers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s (ALEA) Highway Patrol and Marine Patrol divisions, ALEA’s Aviation Unit, special agents with the State Bureau of Investigation, officers with the Metro Area Crime Suppression Unit, the Montgomery Police Department, the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office, and the Prattville Police Department.

The incident remains under investigation.
