Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman says a man was shot by a deputy after the man charged at the deputy with a gun.

Turman said at around 4AM yesterday, the Covington County E-911 dispatch received several hang-up calls from Chad Sheehan, who he says has a history of domestic violence.

Turman said a deputy was sent to a home where Sheehan is known to cause problems on County Road 21 in Red Level for a welfare check. He said the deputy noticed the lights in the home were on, and as he approached, a vehicle rammed through a gate, charging the officer.

Turman said Chad Sheehan, who doesn’t live there, got out of the vehicle with a gun and charged at the deputy.

The deputy fired several shots, striking Sheehan, Turman said.

He said the deputy provided life-saving measures on Sheehan, who was taken to Andalusia Hospital where he is in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries. The deputy wasn’t hurt.

Turman said the State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident, and charges will be filed. The Covington County Sheriff’s Office is currently overseeing Sheehan’s care at the hospital to ensure public safety.
