Montgomery Council District 5 Race Too Close To Call

Two out of nine Montgomery city council members are out. That number may rise to three, only 20 votes separate the candidates in District 5.

Cornelius “CC” Calhoun’s been the councilman in District 5 for 12 years. But local political newcomer and IT consultant William Green’s up after the election by 20 votes. It’s up to counting provisional ballots to confirm Green’s win. Calhoun says he’s at peace with whatever happens. And both candidates expressed a willingness to work together on a transition in the district leadership.

Calhoun, Montgomery City Council District 5 said, “I am going to wish my opponent well, I am here if he wants to reach out and get some insight because there’s a learning curve, you have to learn the process down there.”

William Green Jr., Leading the District 5 Race said, “You don’t stay in office 12 years unless you are doing something right. And also, I only won by 20 votes so it does mean to me that people did like what he was doing. So I know he has things that he’s been doing over the years, I want to sit down and talk with him and then implement those things. I don’t want to come in and blow it up and say hey it’s going to be like this, I want the transition to be smooth.”

Provisional ballots are votes cast when there’s a question of voter eligibility. They will be counted next Tuesday, we do not know how many there are. But, election officials did say there were only 19 in the general election. Once those ballots are counted then the race is over. There is no automatic recount for municipal elections.
