Former superintendent of Selma City Schools dies at 65

Dr. Austin Obasohan, the former superintendent of Selma City Schools, has died at the age of 65.

Obasohan died Thursday, July 24. At the time of his death, he was serving as superintendent of Duplin County Schools in North Carolina, a position he had held for 15 years. News reports said he had been battling cancer.

He led Selma City Schools from 2008 to 2010.

Selma City Schools released this statement:

“We are saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Austin Obasohan, a former superintendent of the Selma City School District. Dr. Obasohan led the district from 2008 to 2010 and dedicated himself to fostering the growth and potential of every child in Selma. His impact on the community was profound, and our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this challenging time. His contributions will never be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed.”

Obasohan was born in western Africa, starting his education in Nigeria before completing his studies in England and the U.S. He received his PhD from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina.
