Behind the Biscuits: Homer Bush Jr.

Homer Bush Jr., son of former Big Leaguer and World Series Champion Homer Bush played several sports growing up, but naturally it was baseball that stuck.

“It was one of those things that you knew I was gonna play baseball. Obviously, my dad did it and the first gift that I got as a child was a baseball glove with my name on it, so it was kind of set in stone,” says Bush Jr.

Bush Jr. describes himself as a “late bloomer,” and says coming out of high school he didn’t have many college offers. However, he ended up exactly where he needed to be at Grand Canyon University where he played three seasons for the Antelopes.

Throughout college Bush Jr. continued to work in hopes of one day being able to follow in his dad’s footsteps and play professional baseball, and eventually his work paid off. Homer was drafted in 2023 by the Padres in the 4th round as the 128th overall pick. Ironically, the Padres were the same team that drafted his father back in 1991.

“They ended up picking me which is crazy. It’s one of those things where I really wanted to get drafted by them and it ended up going down that way which was super cool. To get drafted by a team that I had connections to and my dad had connections to,” explains Bush Jr.

Another interesting overlap in both Bush and Bush Jr’s stories, they were both traded to American League East Organizations. Bush traded to the Yankees from the Padres and Bush Jr. traded to the Rays.

Bush Jr. is No. 16 on the Rays prospect list and his expected call up to the big leagues is listed as 2026.
