Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed addresses first day of school year
As students in Montgomery Public Schools head back to class, Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed discussed the new school year.
In an address to the city, Reed spoke about the importance of consistent attendance, not just for the first day but also for the whole year.
He said he spoke with new school Superintendent Dr. Zickeyous Byrd earlier this summer about several challenges in the system.
“We need for our young people in our school system to get off on the right track, to get off on the right step for this year and the first day certainly matters and we plan to be out there,” Reed said in his speech. For us, we think it’s even more important to focus on the everyday attendance of our students and the everyday participation of their parents and caregivers. We cannot stress enough the gaps that we are seeing in education in both in terms of reading and math scores where we need our students to be.”
Reed said he applauds all of the city stakeholders who took part in providing supplies and essential needs for the students this past weekend to begin their first day of school.
Montgomery Public Schools start the new school year Tuesday, August 5.
