Buckmasters weekend starts with golf tournament
The Buckmaster’s Expo weekend began with a golf tournament in Prattville.
The tournament raises money so that people with disabilities can more easily enjoy outdoor activities.
Today’s event was hosted by outdoor legends Jackie Bushman, the founder of Buckmasters, and Bill Jordan, the founder of Realtree, and benefits Big Dreams Outdoors. It’s is a nonprofit that gives people with intellectual disabilities the chance to experience hunting and fishing through adaptive equipment and guided events.
A total of 27 teams teed off and had a great time, while raising $25,000.
“This is the first time we’ve had a chance to work with kids who have down syndrome and autism,” Bushman told Action 8 News. “I personally have a grandson that has down syndrome, so it means a lot to me personally, but these kids and adults they can get to the outdoors just like anybody else. They just need an access and little help and that’s what we are trying to accomplish here — not only with this golf tournament but Big Dreams Outdoors does it nationwide now. That’s what we’re working on.”
“I think the feel good moment right here for everybody — just taking time out from their busy schedules and the all that Buckmasters is doing,” Jordan said. “They took kids on turkey hunts this past spring and that, coupled with this group out here today, it’s just been a great day.”
The Buckmasters Expo is one of the largest hunting consumer shows in the country. It runs Friday, August 15, through Sunday, August 17, at the Montgomery Convention Center. Admission is a $1 donation or a canned food item for the Heart of Alabama Food Bank.
