Reed celebrates two nationally-televised football games held in Montgomery
Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed says the city got a big boost from two nationally-televised college football games that have been held at Cramton Bowl over the past two weekends.
On Saturday night, August 23, the FCS Kickoff Classic featured Mercer playing California-Davis, which was televised on ESPN. Then on Sunday night, August 31, Tuskegee played Winston-Salem State in the Red Tails Classic that was aired on ESPNU.
While the FCS Kickoff Classic was halted midway through the fourth quarter due to lightning, at least 15,000 people attended the Red Tails Classic.
The city has already been cashing in on the former Camellia Bowl, now called the IS4S Salute to Veterans Bowl, held each December and seen on ESPN.
This morning at a news conference, Mayor Reed talked about what these games and other events mean for the city.
“These things fuel our economy,” Reed said. “These things are helping fuel our budget which is projected to be the largest in the city’s history if passed by the city council, so we’ve got great revenue coming in. We’ve got great opportunities and we’re thinking about how to make Montgomery more of a destination, not just for those who live in the immediate area, but those who live around the state and around the region itself.”
Upcoming events happening in the city include the annual Riverbend Brewfest on September 12 and the HBCU Classic Weekend on October 4.
