With Christmas quickly approaching people across the country will spend time on the stove or the grill cooking for family members, and firefighters say they want to make sure you stay safe when it comes to preparing meals this holiday season.
When it comes to cooking inside, or out on the grill. The Montgomery Fire Department IS on high alert, making sure people are cooking as safe as possible.
“There’s always going to be a couple fire runs every Christmas eve with people cooking in their kitchen. Stove fires, even turkey fires,” says  LT. Travis Varner of the Montgomery Fire Department
When it comes to preventing fires, officials say it’s key to pay attention to details.
“Make sure if you do have a fire, grease fire especially don’t put water on it, baking soda is good,” says  LT. Varner
Fires AREN’T the only call authorities get. They also get calls on accidents in the kitchen.
Lt. Varner continued saying “as far as pots, make sure that the handles are faced toward the back of the stove, the kitchen could be a busy place with kids playing.”
When it comes to frying turkeys this holiday season fire officials stress that you make sure the turkey is completely thawed out, because that’s one of the main reasons why fires can happen.
