Committee gets update on Montgomery apartment complex issues

MONTGOMERY, ALA (WAKA Action 8) – A committee in the Capital City is raising concerns about environmental issues at some Montgomery apartments.
The Montgomery City Council’s Health, Education, and Recreation Committee met Wednesday. Members discussed The Rosa Parks Place Apartments and the Sherwood Apartments, which have recently come under scrutiny by the Montgomery City Council after they failed several inspections.
Rosa Parks Place apartments failed fire and safety inspections, along with issues with the elevator.
Meanwhile, the Sherwood Apartments had severe water leaks and safety issues.
The hearing updated the committee about the improvements that have been made at both locations. Right now, councilmembers are satisfied with the changes being made at both complexes.
“I’m very satisfied with what they’re doing,” says Montgomery City Council Member Franetta Riley, who represents Distrcict 4. “They have made the effort to make sure that they’re putting safety first and making sure that the residents are living in good and clean environments. One thing I always want to do is keep that open communication with the managers, so that’s why I always go by to check in to see what the city can help with and what we can do.”
“It’s nice when you bring people to the table because we want to make sure that everybody in Montgomery has a safe place to live, that it’s clean, that it’s up to standard, that maintenance is taken care of, and that everyone can have affordable housing in every area,” says Council Member Julie Beard, who represents District 2.
Councilmembers say there are other apartment complexes in Montgomery who are expected to go under the same inquiry regarding safety issues.
