ONLY ON 8: Political Analyst Steve Flowers discusses why the attorney general’s race has gone so negative
ONLY ON 8 (WAKA) – Just about every election year, one Alabama race goes negative, and this year, it’s the attorney general’s race.
These are the candidates in the race:
REPUBLICANS
Pamela Casey
Jay Mitchell
Katherine Robertson
DEMOCRATS
Jeff McLaughlin
Many negative ads are airing in the Republican race. Action 8 Political Analyst Steve Flowers says there are three good candidates, but with Mitchell and Robertson having the money, they are going after each other.
Flowers says that while Mitchell has the endorsements of the state’s business community, Robertson has picked up a lot of campaign money from out-of-state.
Flowers says that negative campaigning often works. He wonders whether it could benefit the other Republican candidate, Pamela Casey. He says that when two candidates try to tear each other down, the third candidate can collect voters from people who decide they don’t like the other two.
Flowers says that’s just what happened in the Republican race for governor in 2010, when Robert Bentley capitalized on the negative campaigning going on between Bradley Byrne and Tim James, and went from third to first in the runoff that year.
Flowers says there will be a runoff in this race.
