thumbnailLawmakers are taking a tough look at Montgomery’s speed cars, and they don’t like what they see.

The senate voted Thursday to repeal the law that lets the city operate the cars.

This has been a big frustration for many in the city, and senators say it’s time to end this relatively new practice.

For those who haven’t seen them, the city will park these unmanned cars equipped with speed cameras in heavily trafficked areas.

If you speed by, it takes a picture and you get a ticket in the mail.

The city rents the cars from a third party company that gets a chunk of the money.

Sen. Dick Brewbaker brought up the bill to repeal that law.

“Frankly in my opinion the city has abused this bill. Every member of the montgomery delegation has gotten an avalanche of complaints from their constituencies. This is, this just didn’t turn out the way we thought it would so it’s time to repeal it,” said Sen. Brewbaker.

Brewbaker says he’s working closely with the Montgomery delegation in the House to get this bill passed and on to the governor.

Montgomery has had these speed cars in the city for about three years now and issued about 13,000 tickets.

Mayor Todd Strange put out a statement saying he’s “disappointed the senate has taken the position of self interest over public safety concerns.”

He says if lawmakers would ask neighborhood associations and schools, they would find very quickly that the cameras work.
