Montgomery Native Wilson Adams called up to Big Leagues
Former St. James player Wilson Adams was picked up in the 32nd round of the MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.
On Saturday June 11th, Wilson Adams received a call that changed his life.
“My dad calls me. Did you hear? As far as I knew my nephew had said his first words or something. He said no, you’ve been drafted.”
Adams was picked up in the 32nd round of the 2016 MLB draft by the Milwaukee Brewers.
His love of the game started at a young age, and continued through high school at St. James. He played under coach Keith Lucky, and it was on the mound at Trojan Field where Adams really came into his own.
“He was very confident in his ability,” Lucky said. “He got out and worked hard, but when he put it out on the field it shut some people up.”
Adams was equally as complimentary about his former coach.
“He really pushed me and he showed me how to become a man and how to deal with adversity,” Adams said.
Wilson faced some adversity his junior year of college at Alabama Huntsville. Adams broke under the pressure of expectations.
“I got lazy over Christmas break. I just didn’t understand how to go through the process.”
But he didn’t let fear get in the way. Adams fought back and overcame his struggles.
“It was a lot of maturation to be honest with you. More of that and more of understanding my role and attacking the idea of what I wanted to be.I threw 18 innings my junior year and then my senior year I threw 95.”
Looking back on his baseball career thus far, Adams is grateful for all it’s taught him.
“Baseball was and is my first love. Baseball has taught me more about becoming a man, fighting against adversity and showing that it does take hard work to progress in life”
As he ventures out to pursue his dream of making it in the big leagues, he’ll never forget his roots.
