The dirt is moving and construction is underway for phase two of Lanier Place off E.D. Nixon Avenue.

“For 30 years we have not had the opportunity, except for one other time, to have residential development west of Court Street,” said Mayor Todd Strange.

Strange says it has been a joint effort of federal, state and local government, as well as the private sector.
Three million dollars of a federal grant will be used to construct 17 more single family homes.

They will be 1200 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 2 baths.  Families will be able to rent or rent to own the house.
For Voncile Gregory, who has lived on the westside all of her life, it’s a happy day.

“It’s bringing back hope to westside of town. We’ve had so many houses torn down over the last few years until it looks like a ghost town, so now we are feeling that this is gonna lively it up,” said Gregory.

Residents hope this will help give the westside of Montgomery what it needs to thrive.

“This is my community. I’ve seen this community flourish. I’ve seen it deteriorate. And now I’m seeing it come back alive again,” said County Commissioner Jiles Williams.

The construction should be completed by fall of 2016.
