Deputies Keep K9s Cool During Summer Heat

With temperatures reaching the upper 90’s law enforcement is continuing to find ways to not only keep themselves cool, but also their four legged partners.

Deputies use a K9 cooling system in their patrol cars to keep their four legged partners safe from the summer heat. It’s called the hot dog system. If the Patrol car gets over 87 degrees a beeper that the deputy is wearing goes off, followed by an alarm from the car. The back seat windows immediate go down and a fan comes on for the dog to keep it cool.In the past year, several K9s have died of heat exhaustion inside of police cars. For deputies like Corporal David Tally, he says he couldn’t imagine leaving Blade in the car for even a few minutes alone because of the bond they share.

“He’s my partner. We ride together everyday 10 hours a day. He knows me, I know him. I depend on him and he depends on me, and that’s one of the main concerns on a day like today”, says Corporal David Tally of the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.

K9s for law enforcement range from German Shepards, Rottweilers, and Labrador Retriever breeds.
