Montgomery Co. Sheriff Reacts To National Violence

Thousands of people from all walks of life took the the streets this weekend as part of Black Lives Matter protests.

The nationwide movement comes after a deadly week last week.

Two black men were shot and killed by police officers, then five police officers were killed and several others injured in Dallas.

“Well, really it was mind boggling. When you look at something like that my head was spinning, I was like I can’t believe this is happening,” said Montgomery County Sheriff Derrick Cunningham.

Cunningham was at the Montgomery Rally on Sunday.

He says he was impressed with the way thing went.

“You got to look at that rally, we had all facets and really pretty much, I listened to some of the people talking and they were talking unity, talking about training up their children on what to do if they have an encounter with law enforcement. It wasn’t just negative talk,” said Sheriff Cunningham.

He says he’s always worried for his deputy’s safety but he trusts in the training they get through the department.
He says there are no plans to change any of the training they go through, and they’re already required to go through cultural sensitivity training.

“The thing that I have to do is to make sure that my men and women are out there riding the streets, that are protecting and serving the communities of Montgomery.”
