Is There Enough Parking in Downtown Montgomery?

Is there enough parking in downtown Montgomery to handle big events? City officials say yes, but they say the problem is–many people don’t know about it. Now they say they’re trying to get more people to use the parking options downtown.
It’s a big weekend for downtown Montgomery with big events, including second Saturday and a Biscuits baseball game set to bring in about 12,000 visitors, according to montgomery officials. Ahead of the crowds, they’re trying to let people know where the parking is. They say there are about 2,500 parking spaces, plus 5 parking decks within a quarter mile from the riverfront.
“There’s a plethora of places to park. it’s just there’s a lot of people, if they can’t see where they’re wanting to go, they think it’s an awful long way from where they’re parking their car and we want them to understand–it’s just not that far.”
City officials say parking problems are part of growth and something many busy downtowns face.
This region, it seems like in the City of Montgomery, we’re not used to the idea of parking in parking decks. We travel to other cities of size and you park your car in a parking deck and don’t see it for a couple of days, because that’s just where the parking is.
City officials say just because the parking is free after 6 and on weekends doesn’t mean you can park anywhere. The prohibited zones are still off-limits.
City officials say all the downtown parking lots are equipped with security and surveillance to make sure visitors feel safe.
