Pike Road Looks Ahead To Next School Year

Thousands of students are back to school in Montgomery County.
But one year from now, a new school district will change the map for students in the area.
The City of Pike Road plans to open its brand new school and system next August.
Many of those students will come from Montgomery Public School System.
It’s one of the most exciting parts of the school year. Montgomery Students are finally getting back to the classroom, and some are even going for the first time.
The City of Pike Road is looking forward to having its own first day next year.
“The thing that really excites us is the day we see our yellow school buses on the road,” said Pike Road Superintendent Suzanne Freeman.
There’s not much to see yet, but the new school will house about 750 students from kindergarten through 8th grade in its first year.
Freeman says there’s still a lot of work to do, like hiring staff.
“We’re going to do a teacher recruitment day sometime in the late fall early winter. In which we will invite people to come. We’ll talk about who we are and the type of teachers that we’re looking for,” sid Freeman.
But that’s not all the work that’s left. By breaking away from Montgomery Public Schools, Pike Road forcing the county and state to redraw the district lines. Superintendent Margaret Allen says she’s ready to work with the new system.
“We have a projection of about how many students but then even that is not as clear as we would want it to be so those are the kinds of things we’re looking at because it’s not as clear cut as your line starts here,” said Allen.
Pike Road Mayor Gordon Stone says it’s a big step for other projects in the town as well
“We’ve got a trail network. We’ve got an extensive plan for outreach networks that we’re going to do as part of our park system in Pike Road. We’ve got a phenomenal recreation and agricultural plan out there and I think the opening of the school sends the message that we can do those projects too,” said Stone.
