The Salvation Army is kicking off the annual Red Kettle campaign. It’s the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The money you give goes to feed, clothe and shelter local families, not just this Christmas, but year round.

For the third year, Alabama News Network is teaming up with the Salvation Army to help meet those goals. Officials with the Salvation Army say they’re trying to raise $300,000 this year.

Thursday morning, Lieutenant Governor Kay Ivey joined Salvation Army officials, business leaders and Alabama News Network to kick off the Red Kettle campaign on the capitol steps.

“People are so generous here. It’s just a wonderful time to give back and give back and give the resources so the Salvation Army can continue its mission year round,” Ivey said.

Every year, the Salvation Army provides food, shelter, clothing, and even Christmas gifts for children. The need is growing, but the resources don’t always keep up.

“Many of these organizations, not just the Salvation Army, aren’t getting the donations they used to,  and the Salvation Army happens to be about $300,000 behind, so we came together this year and decided that we would do kettle sponsorships, and so that has made a big difference already, going into the kettle drive,” said Alabama News Network General Manager Jesse Grear.

The sponsors on the signs you’ll see at donation locations give the kettle campaign a $41,000 head start. To raise the money to last another year, though, the Salvation Army needs your support.

“It’s not me, It’s not the Salvation Army. It’s the folks in Montgomery who are giving, that give us the ability to do that for someone,” said Major Walter Strong with the Salvation Army.

You can look out for Salvation Army bell ringers at dozens of locations in our area through Christmas Eve.
