City of Montgomery Looks Back on 2014

2014 is almost in the books and Mayor Todd Strange says he is proud of what the city has accomplished.
“Very good year for us. I mean, obviously you get ‘Best Historical City’, ‘All-American City’ award, ‘Fastest Growing Per Capita Income’, you’re not in the ‘Top 10’ crime list, you’re ahead of Huntsville in less crime. So its been a really good year,” said Strange.
The mayor says the timing was unfortunate when he asked Police Chief Kevin Murphy to resign over his alleged aggressive management style within the police department.
But the mayor and other city councilmen say they are looking forward to having a new chief in place soon.
“Getting a permanent police chief in here and getting some stability will be good for the city. I’ve always said we need to hire more police officers. I think we do. I certainly know they are working as hard as they possibly can to catch bad guys and prevent crimes from happening,” said Arch Lee.
While the police department is doing what it can, councilman C.C. Calhoun says there are things that will have to happen to be an even better city in 2015.
“We’ve been doing some great things. There are things we can do better, but you know it takes more than the city and elected officials. It takes the whole community working together to make Montgomery the city that we want to see,” said Calhoun.
The new police chief, Ernest Finley will be officially announced Wednesday, Dec. 17th at 4:00pm.
