If you’ve seen the countdown clock in downtown Montgomery, time is up. We now know what the big announcement is.
Three new restaurants are coming to lower Dexter Avenue. Cucos Mexican Restaurant, Island Delight Carribean, and Mama Goldberg’s Deli will set up shop near the Irish Bred Pub.
“We chose this location for foot traffic and the historic scenery behind it,” said Richard Smith, owner of Island Delight.
“On one end we have the water fountain, on the other end we have the capitol. I think this is one of the most trafficked streets in downtown,” said Oscar Franco of Cucos.
On Thursday, the restaurants showed off samples of their food and plans for their businesses. This–after the city launched huge improvement and infrastructure improvements ahead of the 50th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march.
“The city has put in a lot to really improve the sidewalks and make it accomodating for businesses,” said Hal Newell with Mama Goldberg’s.
“This is the private sector doing what it does extremely well. What government did was provide the infrastructure, prime the pump, just start building that bridge, and now private developers are coming,” said Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange.
The Irish Bred Pub has been on lower Dexter Avenue for more than a year. Manager Chris McBride says the announcement is good news.
“You know, a lot of folks will ask me, do you see these other restaurants as competition? Not at all. I see it as, we want the street to be the destination,” said McBride.
Mayor Todd Strange says the countdown will start on the clock for a new announcement in about two weeks. He said that will also come from private business developers.
