A Macon County man has about 100 days to complete an extreme makeover–on a mustang.
Taylor McIntosh is competing in the Extreme Mustang Makeover challenge. He won last year with his horse, Owen, who he adopted after the contest.
this year, he’s training a six-year-old Colorado mustang named Reno. Friday was his seventh day of work with Reno.
In September, he’ll go up against about 80 trainers and their mustangs for the title.
“It’s really about the horse. We’ve got to better the horse, and I know that if I show up with a bad horse, he’s not going to get adopted out, he’s not going to get a good home, and he’ll get a bad label. That’s not what I’m looking for,” McIntosh said.
All the mustangs for the competition come from wild herds in the west, where they are protected under federal law. To make sure the herd isn’t too large, every year horses are removed and adopted.
The Mustang Heritage Foundation, which sponsors the Extreme Mustang Makeover, has helped nearly 5,500 horses find homes since 2007.
