This week, Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama (HMMA) is celebrating 10 years of the automaker’s Montgomery plant. We’re looking back at the beginning.

It was with his signature back in 2002 that then-Governor Don Siegelman made it official that Hyundai was coming to Alabama.

In the following two years, Hyundai spent more than a billion dollars to build it’s state-of-the-art car manufacturing plant in what was once rural farm land off Intertstate 65 in Hope Hull.

In May of 2005, Hyundai held its official grand opening celebration.  The event was a big spectacle that drew dozens of dignitaries from both the U.S. and Korea, including former President George H. W. Bush.

State and city leaders say the plant has paid off, considering how the plant is operating at full capacity and Hyundai’s global sales have continued to increase.
