With reports that Hyundai is looking to build more cars in the U.S., the company’s U.S. CEO is raising questions about whether Montgomery has enough workers.
Hyundai America CEO David Zuchowski said if the car company adds another plant in Alabama, it would place a burden on the labor force. He reportedly has said he doesn’t think Montgomery is providing enough workers with the proper skills.
But Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange says that’s not the case.
“We’ve got 3,200 to 3,500 workers there today. Just a couple of years ago, they added the third shift and needed 877 workers. We had 25,000 applications for those 877,” Strange told Alabama News Network.
City officials say they’ve reached out to the CEO of Hyundai Motor America. They’ve invited him to come to the Capital City to see first hand the quality of workers and what the city is doing to continue workforce development.
As we have reported, a Korean news agency recently reported that Hyundai is considering whether to build a second plant near the Montgomery facility. So far, no one from the company has confirmed that report to us.
