As the temperature goes up, so does crime in most places, especially when you talk about burglaries.
Montgomery Sheriff Derrick Cunningham says a lot of that has to do with too much idle time.
“You got so many people out of school, so many people at home, people that are pretty much just roaming the streets so you know. Most crimes are something of opportunity. People are looking for the opportunity,” said Sheriff Cunningham.
Sheriff Cunningham says it’s your responsibility to take away that opportunity, especially in rural areas where neighbors could be miles apart.
Things have been going pretty well compared to other years in Montgomery county so far.
“We’ve been very fortunate this summer, we’ve increased our presence though. We’ve added some units to make sure they’re riding nothing but the neighborhoods, making sure they’re taking care of people’s property while they’re away or at work. So hopefully that visibility will take away that opportunity as well,” said Cunningham.
The same can’t be said for the city of montgomery though. So far through the year Montgomery police have seen almost 70 more burglaries than the same time last year. But many people are taking the issue seriously.
“One of the first things that I did this summer to protect my family was i bought a big dog. On top of that we leave lights on outside,” said Andrew Nelson.
“Am I worried about it? not 100 percent, but am i worried to a percent where I have to look over my back every once in a while? I guess I would be,” said Kyron Moss.
