The Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare System’s been in the news for more than a year, with complaints of long wait times and inadequate patient care. Now , VA officials hope a new Montgomery facility will not just mean a new resource for veterans, but also help alleviate some of the problems inside.
The new Montgomery Veterans Affairs outpatient facility is almost complete. And today the public got the chance to step inside the more than $35 million facility. VA leaders held the open house to try to recruit volunteers. Right now they have 650 and are looking to add two to three hundred more.
The new building will allow the VA to expand from its Perry Hill location.
Robin Jackson, CAVHCS Interim Director said, “We are not there yet, but we are continuing to go in the right direction. We are improving as a health care organization. Last year this time I think we were third from the worst with our wait times and we’ve improved that by at least 17 spots. So we are not third from the worst in the country but we still have work to do and we are still hiring staff and we are still excited about the staff we have in the pipeline to bring on in the different disciplines.”
The new VA center off Chantilly Parkway will open in October. For more information on how you can volunteer visit: http://www.volunteer.va.gov/
