Much Colder Air Heading Our Way!
The severe storm threat has moved out of our area and we’re expecting calmer conditions over the weekend. We do see a drop in temperatures but nothing like we’re going to experience next week. A blast of Arctic air is on the way and there’s some precipitation coming with it.
In the meantime, high pressure returns and we’re looking mostly sunny and dry both Saturday and Sunday. Despite the sunshine, temps will be rather chilly. Daytime highs will only manage upper 40s to lower 50s while overnight lows will drop into the lower 30s.
Early next week, the flood gates open up for Arctic air to invade the deep south. Before the really cold air gets into the area, we have a round of light precipitation moving through the region Monday into early Tuesday. We’re in the 50s Monday, so the precipitation will be rain but as the colder air spills into the area Monday night, a wintry mix is possible Tuesday morning. Right now, limited impacts would be possible for areas around Demopolis, Marion, Clanton, and Alexander City. Those impacts would include: light snow/ice accumulations and the potential for slippery roads. Snow flurries would be possible as far south as the I-85/Hwy80 corridor with no impacts.
The most significant threat to the area will come from the bitter cold temps we’re expecting Tuesday night through Thursday morning. Highs will only manage upper 30s to lower 40s while overnight temps dip into the mid to upper teens.  That’s pipe bursting cold and precautions should be taken very soon. Pets will need a safe and warm place to stay during this time as well. This weekend would be a good time to handle all those things necessary to prepare your family for those bitter cold days.
