Since 1948, Montgomery’s Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church has brought its flavorful Labor Day Barbecue to people in the Capital City.

Today, for its 77th year, cars were again lined up at the drive-through on the church grounds at the corner of Mt. Meigs Road and South Capital Parkway.

Food was available while supplies lasted from 8AM until noon, with walk-up and drive-thru service available.

The proceeds from the barbecue help the church keep up its sanctuary and to help the community.

A longtime patriarch of the Greek Orthodox Church, and this event, Theo Katechis, passed away this past April. But he was remembered fondly by all who were there.

“Our most recently departed patriarch was Theo Katechis, who operated Chris’ Hotdogs downtown for many years, and he was one of the pillars of the community,” Rev. Father Paul Lundberg told Action 8 News.  “We miss him dearly. He and his family were a big part of this barbecue and continuing that it’s not just a way to honor them and their family, but also to recognize that they were part of a greater family. We are part of the family of God.”
