Cold Sunday night; Cool days, cold nights, sunshine early this week
Some snow fell across extreme southeast Alabama early Sunday morning. Minor accumulations occurred mainly near and southeast of highway 29. Around 1/2″ of snow accumulated on grassy/elevated surfaces in Covington county. The troy municipal airport reported snow for a couple hours early Sunday morning. However, sunshine quickly returned after sunrise, warming temperatures above freezing, quickly melting anything frozen.
Thanks to abundant sunshine and brisk northwest winds, roads likely dried Sunday afternoon, and probably remain free of ice early MLK Day morning, despite temperatures falling into the low to mid 20s. Monday looks sunny, but temperatures only warm into the low 50s. Monday night looks very cold again, with lows in the low to mid 20s. Tuesday remains cool despite a mainly sunny sky, with highs in the upper 40s to low 50s.
Temperatures trend milder Wednesday through Friday, with highs back in the low to mid 60s. Clouds increase Wednesday, with a chance for scattered showers Thursday and Friday as our next front approaches, but maybe stalls across the southeast. Colder air may arrive next weekend, but longer range models suggest any chance for frozen precipitation remains well to our north and west, but it may be worth watching. Regardless, rain remains possible next weekend.
