SNAP Benefits to End for 40 thousand Alabamians
A major cut affecting folks who depend on food stamps... Soon, 40-thousand Alabamians will lose their SNAP benefits. More than 20 other states are also cutting assistance.
Between 500 thousand to one million people across the country will begin to lose access nationwide this month. It’s all a part of plan to get individuals a job instead of relying on the government for assistance.
In order to keep their access to the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (or SNAP) for more than three months, able-bodied adults ages 18-49 who don’t have children or other dependents must work, volunteer, or enroll in a job-training program for 20 hours a week or more.
Alabama News Network talked to the owner at BJ’s Grocery Store in Montgomery. Kenneth Jackson says he has seen a difference Friday in his business with less people coming in with food stamps or EBT cards.
And He says he has mixed feelings about it.
“It’s a give and take situation. Some are able to do so and some aren’t. Some of the ones I’m looking at that I know personally that are cut off, it really hurts as a small business owner… I’m doing what I can do to help and inspire them to just hold on. Something will work out,” said Jackson.
