MPS Discusses Options for More Magnet Schools

Montgomery Public Schools moves a step closer to expanding the magnet program in the school system.

The city council met with the board of education to discuss the magnet program expansion Wednesday.

Almost 2-thousand students are on the waiting list for a magnet school.
The board of education proposed options for transforming some schools to magnet schools. The enrollment and projected construction costs were included.
City Councilman Richard Bollinger says there were many different options presented.

“When we started magnet schools and we looked at Forest Avenue, it started with 2 classrooms in the whole school. So we don’t have to convert a whole school if we don’t need to. But we want to give the kids on a waiting list that opportunity to get in there and do the best they can do,” said Bollinger.

Many of the 10 magnet schools in the city have received state and even national recognition.
