A civil rights pioneer is laid to rest this weekend.
One of two ceremonies for Amelia Boynton Robinson was held at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Selma. United States Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Reverend Jesse Jackson and Congressman John Lewis were all in attendance.
And in the crowd of hundreds- foot soldiers that stood beside Robinson on Bloody Sunday. She along with hundreds were attacked by state troopers. They say she was a quiet leader and they hope her legacy lives on.
Charles Mauldin, Foot Soldier said, “You have to commit yourself to the American dream, which she did and sustain that dream and support that dream and don’t give up, she never did.”
There are discrepancies about Robinson’s age. While it was officially announced she passed away at the age of 104, Senator Hank Sanders found a census that brings her age to 110. Regardless, in her century of life she had a great impact on the voting rights movement.
