Behind the Scenes of ASF’s “The Mousetrap”
Agatha Christie's "The Mousetrap" opens next week at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival.
Set construction is underway at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival as crews get ready for “The Mousetrap.”
ASF’s Producing Artistic Director Geoffrey Sherman says he chose to bring the play to Montgomery because of the reaction he saw from audiences across the country years ago.
“This play I think is one that could really work well in the American market. A decade passed and I did nothing about it and then, all of a sudden, I thought I’m leaving here. what can I give as a parting gift that is something very English that might well work? And that’s why we ended up with ‘The Mousetrap,'” said Sherman.
We’re told the Agatha Christie thriller has a little of everything to offer.
“Hopefully people will come and hopefully they will enjoy it. They will laugh. They will cry. They will be surprised. All of the things we like in theatre,” said Director James Bowen.
Bowen says even though the play has been around for some time, he hopes audiences will be able to relate to it in a modern way.
“If you’ve seen the play before, then you might know who the murderer is. If you have not seen the play before, I hope you feel like it’s fresh and new and it’s a play that was written last week, even though it was set in 1952. As I’ve said, it’s the human beings that drive the story,” said Bowen.
