Prattville Looks To Improve MLK Dr.

Prattville is focusing its attention on the Martin Luther King Junior Drive area.

And citizens have some real concerns about their communities.

The city wants to hear your thoughts on how to improve the area around MLK Dr.

It’s the first of several places that the planning department wants to help.

Four years ago, the city of Prattville decided to take a closer look at several areas around town that need improvements.

This week, the planning department is shifting its focus to martin luther king junior drive.

“This is the first that we’ve had an opportunity to look at in depth. Other areas such as the downtown will probably come later. We have areas along the developing old farm lane that will probably come at a later date,” said City Planner Joel Duke

There’s a community meeting on Thursday at the North Highland Community Center.

Shuniqua Steele has lived in the area for the last 8 years.

One of her biggest concerns is for the kids.

“In my neighborhood I would like to see signs put up for the children, like the children are out playing, and also speed bumps. They come through really fast,” said Steele.

She also wants better equipment for the children. The playground in her neighborhood is falling apart, and she says another one down the street never gets used for the same reason.

But she wants the city to know that they’re getting things right, too.

“I would say that some of the drug activity in the neighborhood has calmed down quite a bit over the years, so that’s one thing,” said Steele.

She’s not the only one with a good experience.

“It’s quiet. It’s a good neighborhood. You don’t have to worry about drama, fighting, shooting or none of that. You don’t have to worry about anyone breaking into your house,” said Trequan Savage who recently moved to the area.

Duke says this won’t be your average community meeting. There will be games alongside maps and other plans for people to critique.

That meeting will be take place this Thursday night at 7:00 at the North Highland Community Center.
